In this blog post, I am going to share with you the number one trap when it comes to moving your business into a warehouse. If you are currently thinking about moving your Amazon FBA business into a warehouse, then this is going to be a fantastic blog post for you, because I am going to share with you some of the things which Kev has learned over the years.

Kev first originally moved out of his home into a 2,000SQFT warehouse, then in 2020, they ended up moving into a 10,000SQFT warehouse. Kev has learned a lot of different lessons, and I am going to share some of the things which Kev has learned with you.

Congratulations!!

First of all, congratulations on thinking about moving your business into a warehouse. What an amazing and inspiring action to take in your business - it is an amazing milestone. The chances are that you have been building your business from the ground up, building it from home, your dining room, your living room, your shed, your garage - however you have been resourceful in getting your hands dirty, and working your business in your home.

Now is a super motivating and inspiring time to get into a warehouse, with the mindset of, "I'm going to do this, we are going to do this!" This is going to be amazing, and it is an amazing milestone to take.

Plan

The biggest takeaway which I want to share with you in this blog post, is that, if you move into a warehouse, it is a really big moment, so first of all, you are going to want to take the time to think it through as much as you possibly can. Plan as much as you possibly can. Is your business ready for the warehouse? Have you got the revenue? Is there profitability within your business? Can you actually afford the warehouse? And for Kev, it is when you first go into the warehouse, it is really important to take a moment and focus on the priority of your business, and that is taking action on the tasks that are involved, which drives profitability and revenue for you in the first place.

Number One Trap

What you see a lot, and it puts additional pressure on you, when you move into a warehouse in the first place, there are most likely going to be a lot of things which you are going to think about purchasing, there are going to be a lot of amazing ideas you have, like shelving, desks, tables, pallet stackers, racking - you are going to be inspired, and you are going to be wanting the cutting edge of everything. You are going to want to kit out the warehouse.

However, one of the things which Kev highly recommends is, when you are in that first period of having the warehouse, it is really important that when you take a step like this, that you do stabilize  the ship the ship, you make sure the ship is actually stable. And in the way that actually looks like is take your time to invest in capital expenditure for things which you may not necessarily need currently. You may not need to spend hundreds or even thousands of pounds on shelving or racking to start with. If you have the capital or capability, then go for it, but if you are going in and the first thing you do is spend thousands of pounds on racking, shelving, and carpets, that is what should be discouraged. I would encourage you to be as patient as you can. The guiding principle for Kev, the number one focus are the results of the warehouse, and the efficiency of processing in your warehouse. For example, if you don't need shelving right now, it is okay to have a pallet on the floor and go pull that pallet, and it is okay to complete the shipment from a little plastic table from Argos you can get for 20 pounds, other than to build long tables or streams, like we have here at Systemise Fulfilment

As you scale and get bigger, you may need bigger tables, you may need to improve your efficiency of your processing system, but it's all in alignment between those, and it's juggling the expenditure compared to the efficiency of carrying out the work that you want to do in the first place, and that is process products, ship products, and the core operations of your business, which is getting products in, getting them logged in, get the shipments created, get them processed and get them out door. That is your number one guided thought and priority.
